Reflecting on 2022

Reflecting on 2022

It’s officially that time of year. The time of year when everyone is focused on wrapping up this year and setting goals for next year.

The time when people start asking you what your New Year’s Resolution is, and you start hearing people say “New Year, New Me!”.

The new year is always a great time to set goals. It’s like someone has hit the reset button and you get a fresh start in the new year.

But, there is one part of this process that I see so often skipped and overlooked. Before setting your new years goals, reflect on this year!

Reflecting on this year is so important. You don’t want to just gloss over everything and move onto the next goal. Without reflection there is so much that is missed that will help you be successful with your new years goals.

First, if you don’t reflect on the year, you might sell yourself short on how the year went. What I mean by that is you might forget all of the accomplishments, wins, and great things you did throughout the year. Reflecting allows you to relive all of these moments and celebrate yourself. It allows you to set goals from a place of confidence and appreciation of yourself and what you did this past year.

Second, if you don’t reflect, you dismiss all of the things that you learned throughout the year. All of the setbacks, failures, obstacles, difficult moments taught you something. Whether it’s a tangible lesson or something you learned about yourself. Take the time to reflect on everything you learned and how you can apply those lessons going forward.

Third, if you don’t reflect, you miss all of the growth you’ve had throughout the year. If you do this every year, you always have last year's reflection to look back on and see how you’ve grown from where you were. Sometimes we get stuck in thinking about what we want to change in the upcoming year. Maybe it’s something we feel we’re lacking or something we want to be better. If you instead take the time to reflect on your growth, approaching a goal where you’re wanting to change something comes from a place of confidence rather than a place of frustration.

So, here are the questions to ask yourself to reflect on your year:

  1. What were my greatest accomplishments and achievements throughout this year?

  2. What did I do that mattered?

  3. What obstacles did I overcome throughout the year?

  4. What lessons did I learn?

  5. How did I grow and improve throughout the year?

  6. What moments/days/memories brought me joy?

  7. How can I use these answers to help me achieve my 2023 goals?

Once you’ve answered these questions, celebrate yourself! There is no doubt that even through obstacles and adversity you accomplished great things! Celebrate it! Reward yourself! Remind yourself of these wins!

Then, set those 2023 goals. Set them from a place of power, confidence, and celebration.

When you set your goals from this place, you’ll feel so much better about the goals you’ve set and your ability to achieve them. You won’t set them from a place of fear or doubt. And my guess is that you’ll stay committed to them beyond the second or third week of January.
