Motivation for Athletic Excellence
What is motivation & Why is it important?
What is motivation?
Motivation stands as the cornerstone for athletes aspiring to excel in their sports. It's common knowledge that achieving excellence requires hard work, and naturally, motivation is the force that propels us to engage in this hard work. Whether it's pushing through after a disappointing game or waking up at the crack of dawn for practice, motivation is key.
Why is motivation so vital? It's what drives athletes to set their alarms for 5 AM practices, to invest additional hours training beyond team obligations, and to delve deeply into studying the game for continuous improvement. For some athletes, motivation flows effortlessly because their goals and the reasons behind them are crystal clear.
Why motivation is important for athletes..
However, not every athlete finds this drive easily accessible. When the reasons behind the hard work are murky, maintaining motivation becomes a challenge. The question arises: without a clear 'why', how can one find the enthusiasm to endure grueling double days or the discipline to wake up at the sound of their 5 AM alarm?
Moreover, a lack of motivation can sometimes signal deeper mental blocks preventing an athlete from fully committing to their goals. Common mental hurdles include:
Avoidant Behaviors: Often seen in athletes recovering from injuries, this involves shying away from certain skills due to fear of re-injury.
Fear of Failure: This fear can lead to playing it safe, avoiding risks in gameplay out of concern for mistakes, or preferring to pass rather than risk missing a shot.
Feeling Overwhelmed: When the sport consumes every aspect of life, transforming from a passion into a burdensome obligation, it can significantly dampen motivation.
Motivation extends beyond mere dedication to becoming the best. It encompasses finding joy in the journey. Without this enjoyment, staying positive and driven, especially during setbacks, becomes a daunting task.
Remember, sports are meant to be enjoyable, even at the highest levels. If the fun fades, it begs the question: what's the point?
When motivation dwindles, I guide athletes to rediscover that initial spark. Our approach includes:
Identifying their 'why' and the driving forces behind their passion.
Reigniting the fun and enjoyment in the process, embracing both triumphs and challenges.
Addressing any mental barriers that might hinder performance, allowing fears and avoidances to dissipate.
Ultimately, we reconnect athletes with the love that initially drew them to their sport, shifting focus towards the elements that have kept them competing over the years.
