Fall Forward

I recently saw a quote that said, “If you fall, make sure you fall forward.” It me a moment to really take in that quote and think about what it means to fall forward. Then, it made me wonder, how do you "fall forward"?

Let’s start with, “If you fall”...

Honestly, I think it should say WHEN you fall, not if you fall. Because when you are chasing a goal or dream, you will fall along the way. There will be a time or two when an obstacle gets in your way and you have to figure out how to overcome that obstacle. There will be a time when there is a setback where you have to regroup and go again. There's no doubt you will be tested along the way to achieving your goal. (And if you aren’t, DREAM BIGGER!)

Now I'm sure hearing “when you fall” puts you on alert. The warning signs start flashing because it's natural to not want to fall when chasing a goal. A setback or obstacle, usually feels like you’ve taken two steps backwards from where you were at. You were having progress and then you regressed. So how do you fall forward when you clearly have gone backwards?

My advice on how you can fall forward, when you fall:

  1. Learn while you are down. Ask questions of yourself. How can you improve? What went wrong? What needs to change? What worked? Do you need to change your approach or do you need to keep practicing?

  2. Use it as a time of growth. Setbacks and obstacles are when the most growth happens, if you allow yourself to be pushed. Push yourself to learn. Push yourself to keep going. Push yourself to keep trying. Push yourself to get input from others.

  3. Commit to bouncing back. Don’t let this prevent you from continuing to go after your goals. Commit yourself to trying again and continuing to pursue your goals. You may need to reassess your goal, but get back after it!

  4. Believe in yourself. Have confidence in your ability to overcome whatever it is you are facing. Believe that you will be able to achieve your goal no matter how hard or long you fall.

Moral of the story is that when chasing a goal, falling is inevitable. But allowing yourself to fall forward is the key to continuing on your journey to achieving that goal! Fall towards improvement, growth, commitment, and belief!
